Post Manual tranny oil change
I am about to change it in my 2001 ECHO. So there are a few questions to the group:

1. It seems that the filling bolt is on the TOP of a tranny. Is it correct? What is the size of the wrench? Also, should I take off a battery or an air filter assy?

2. What is the size of the wrench for the drain bolt? Is it the same size as above?.

3. How do I know how much oil to pour? Is it exectly 2 qt. or there is any guide?

BTW, I am going to use Mobil 1 Synthetic 75-90 (GL-5).
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jerry

Changing manual tranny oil is simple in theory but can be fiddly in practice due to limited assessability.
the filler plug is mid-way on the tranny facing forward. can remember the size but its 17 or 19 mm.
there is a quantity stated in the owner's manual. but as a guide, the reason the filler is on the side to prevent over filling.
I had my car on a ramp so doing the oil change is easier.
you will need to remove the air intake to the filter housing for access. ou will need a filler hose if the oil bottle does not come with one. I used castrol synthetic and it came with a filler hose.

Can somebody post A DIY for this? I read an article today talking about the "crunchyness" of all toyota gear boxes and i they wrote that supraforums.com the cure for this was to use some oil called redline shockproof gear oil... Now all i have to do is find some of this gear oil and to learn how to change the oil....

I'm not sure which one would be used for daily driven cars though....

So yesterday I replaced oil in my ECHO?s manual tranny. If anybody is interested about that, read on.

A tranny has 3 plugs:
No. 1 ? a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny, facing the driver side wheel;
No. 2 ? another plug facing forward to prevent overfilling (can be used to re-fill);
No.3 ? a filling plug on the top of the tranny.

You need a 24 mm wrench (I was using 15/16? standard wrench). To make it easy use front ramps. While the front is lifted, remove a plastic shield under the driver side of the car and remove a drain plug (No. 1). While it drains, jack up a rear of the car to make it level (use rear protrusion) and apply jackstands. DO NOT GET UNDER THE CAR IF IT?S SUPPORTED BY ONLY A JACK. Replace the drain plug No. 1. Remove No. 2 plug.

Now there is a choice. Either use No. 2 plug to refill the tranny (that?s what I did), or remove a battery, remove a filling plug (No. 3) and use that plug to refill the tranny, using open plug No. 2 to prevent overfilling. After the transmission is filled with a fresh oil, replace plug/plugs and replace a plastic shield. That?s it.

The oil for replacement was Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w90 (GL-5). My other car is a Saturn and technically inclined members on Saturn?s newsgroup are big on Mobil 1 synthetic. Before oil change the shifting in my 01 ECHO was softer, now it?s more crisp. By the way when I replaced transmission fluid in my Saturn 5-sp from factory?s to Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (yes, Saturn is using ATF for a manual tranny), I didn?t fill any difference.

Hi,

Can anybody verfiy if I've got the right plugs please?

In this picture, I've removed the air box. Is the red arrow pointing to the No 2 (fill/overfill plug)?

In this picture, I've crawled under the front bumper. Is the red arrow pointing to the No 1 (drain) plug?

Thanks!

Hi Adam,

Besides the mtf bolt uncertainty, things are ok.

I've been playing old Atari 2600 video games a lot in the last week. Some of those old games are fun. I'm using the Stella 2600 software emulator under PS2Linux hooked up to my 35" TV. The games sure never looked so good back in the 1970s. I'm not even sure if I ever saw them on a color tv or not...

Exactly. Simple by today's standards, but some of those simple old 4k games were really FUN.

The emulation is excellent:

The games roms are all available:

Alright!!! Thanks for the info on the Atari 2600 emulator. That brings back some memories.... You know any good emulators for NES, SNES, Genesis, etc... I would love to play some of those old games. I get tired of 3D graphics sometimes. The old games were great.
